The fathers saw the truth in the darkness.
The others who opposed them were subjugated.
The children must keep them so or will be overthrown.

The children saw the darkness in the fathers.
They joined with the others in truth.
The fathers were overthrown.

Two stories that keep being told.
The first in such a way that one never makes sense of the details.
The second in such a way that one never can quite believe.

In Heaven, finding no one could depose
God, we watched him closely for a time.
We found that he (as every angel knows)
Is petulant and churlish, though sublime.
But petulant and churlish can be tamed.
We bought a book about it, where were named
The palsies and the greeds of minds like his,
And humored like such persons all that is.
We timed when he would riot, when deflate,
And mapped the parts of life that fed his hate.
When all was done we put up warning signs,
And walls, and bridges over all the mines,
And banked up earth in one great word-shaped mound
Till God was just a rumble underground.
