The others who opposed them were subjugated.
The children must keep them so or will be overthrown.

The children saw the darkness in the fathers.
They joined with the others in truth.
The fathers were overthrown.

Two stories that keep being told.
The first in such a way that one never makes sense of the details.
The second in such a way that one never can quite believe.

No, actually, it's a 900 page monster, but I'm still working this Tolstoy/Vollmann entry in my mind for when I do finish it.
