I read First Love today and had the same this-is-intolerable-(two pages pass)-this-is-hilarious alternating reactions I do with its predecessor Murphy, which I've started I don't know how many times. Also very funny was the early play Human Wishes, in Disjecta, that I'd somehow missed. And his Drunken Boat version is very moving, though I'm mulling over the merits of his "my eyes fixed phantasmagoria" for "I've seen that which men just think they've seen".

Araby was dissected into ruin for me by my archetype-happy professor over the summer. Young Goodman Brown I considered for my own list, but the claims of other Hawthorne stories rose up in choir and I fled. If My First Goose is the same as My First Dovecote then I read and admired it, but surely a goose is not a pigeon.
