My girlfriend and I are taking a reeling break from Scenes from a Marriage.

The only theater movies I saw in the last year were Dawn of the Dead, Harry Potter, The Forgotten, Sideways, and The Phantom of the Opera. Dawn and Forgotten we went to with friends and would have picked otherwise alone. Re. Forgotten, I made a dollar bet with one that it would turn out to be God rather than space aliens. We called it a draw because we're still not sure. Sideways was very fun though also a wince procession, since we took my parents. My sister and I had decided it sounded innocuous for an R-rated (it is the least innocuous R movie ever), and agreed afterwards to stick to Incredibles-level movies in future. Both really loved it though. But that's hardly the point, they're over 70 and the rules are the rules. Harry was diverting. Phantom's a childhood favorite of my girlfriend but we couldn't stop laughing during that first corridor/boat scene or at many points after. I liked the leads and some of the songs, and there were touching moments amid the cheese. Joel Schumacher's direction was characteristically awful. For my birthday I want some kind of tape recorder playing the Phantom's entrance music. Even cheesier but even more touching is The Phantom of the Paradise (on DVD), an early De Palma movie that raids a number of literary thrillers in its attempt to explain Elton John.

If you haven't, see City of God, The Fog of War, anything by Bergman (though note Hour of the Wolf has a high giggle factor), Truffaut, or Kurosawa. Also watch Chinatown over and over.

21 Grams is amazingly well done but you're basically paying to be harrowed. Lost in Translation lost half its cuteness points for the pretentious moments. Dodgeball is worth it for the wrench scene. Collateral and Anchorman won me over. Fahrenheit you've watched by now.

Don't rent Mystic River, Cold Mountain, The Grudge, Envy, Swimming Pool, Matrix 3, and especially especially especially The In-Laws. I seem to be alone in having problems with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Dogville and Kill Bill.
