Dec. 28th, 2012 07:24 pmWhat is it about offices that there's almost invariably one and only one truly competent person? You keep hiring till you get one, and once you've got one you'll never need another, since all problems caused by other underlings will be solved by her before they're even reported to you - something like that?
I tend to know that person at once by her eyes, though if I didn't about two minutes of observing her work would clinch it. There was one at a pharmacy in South Carolina whose existence confused me - the culture of the deep South is mostly a successful thought-smothering machine. But it turned out she's from like two miles from here. She asked my advice about getting her Virginian husband a visa when we spoke last, so probably she's back now. Part of how the machine works is by quickly repelling thinking people who wander into the area.
