I let their own imagination do the work.

What is the thing that I want, they'd go about asking, I know I touched it once but where is it, what was it.

I couldn't give them such a thing. What could? They wanted one from that shore of prizes just past what would ever exist.

So instead of giving it to them I at the right moment told them they already had it. And they'd look at whatever mere heaping of molecules fit the brief laundry list of what was most necessary for my purposes. And they'd see it. What I could never reach their minds, those marvelous minds, captured and superimposed.

I envied them. They had it, truly had it.

I told you that I'd told them that they had it already. It's more true to say that I only then ceased whispering they did not.
