Sep. 1st, 2014 12:58 amAlmost done with Lost S4. I'm amazed on this rewatch at how little any of the episodes matter next to the finales, which lurch the plot forward, dump at least ninety percent of the information we ever get, and introduce most of each next season's mysteries. The other episodes mostly just give the illusion of things happening, e.g. The Constant which is pure blarney. Sure, the whole show is blarney, but that one's blarney within blarney, failing to tell us anything important even in the show's terms: it goes nowhere, means nothing. And kind of ingeniously hides these facts.
Humor has improved markedly as the series goes. Can't remember if it peaks with 4. And in general 4 isn't worse than 3 - I think it was the great disappointment because we all started sensing it was going either nowhere or nowhere worthy. We may have feared that at first, then suspected it, but now we felt it. But whatever it did to make us lose faith (and I couldn't really spot a moment) it's not actually delivering worse episodes.
The Jeremy Bentham thing is dumb, but of course you don't know how dumb it'll be yet when he's first mentioned. I feel like 5 and 6 feature much dumber stuff, but can only remember the end sequence and the Ethan's mother nonsense anymore. I'm sure it will all come back to me shortly before it appears. And even more vividly as we go - last two seasons were 2009 and '10, right? Feels so much longer ago. Maybe series get dated by their beginning year, or their center of gravity.
