Feb. 23rd, 2017 11:32 pmI actually liked The World's End. Didn't exactly love it, but it wasn't criminally overrated like the other Wright/Pegg movies. Between this, Inherent Vice and Grand Budapest Hotel I'm having to remove a lot of directors from my "watch only to renew hatred" column lately. Well, Wes Anderson's still there - his was really fucking annoying about as often as it was cute. Maybe they're just all coincidentally releasing their Jackie Brown/Piano Teacher equivalents at the same time and will directly resume their egregitude?
Shyamalan's still contemptible, at least. Split was stupidly irresponsible and irresponsibly stupid. Weirdly he's actually a good director, I still think, with something approaching a knack for scene pacing and interesting use of spaces, or anyway hiring people with those - his jaw-droppingly terrible ideas are mostly on the writing side. If he was never allowed near the screenplay he could probably helm something good.
Who else do I even hate? Merhige dropped off the map, and people seem to have gradually come around to my side re. LaBute and Von Trier. The three of them are probably collaborating on something thoughtful and lovely together just to annoy me.
