It wanted to remind us of its really good first two seasons. And it wanted to distract us with a light show. And then it wanted to remind us of the really good last episode of Six Feet Under.

I predict fallout.

It seems like it's breaking into camps similar to those of BSG's finale - gooey uncritical schmalz-lovers versus crankypants sticklers for plot coherence. Not surprising insofar as RDM insisted as much as Cuselof on it being "all about the characters, stupid!"

Yeah, I've been thinking about all of Season Six in these terms. Did they do enough in the first five seasons to get the characters forever under your skin? For me, the answer's not clear yet. Needs to soak in some more. But it seems like they think they did enough in the first five seasons establishing the characters that they could do anything they wanted in the final season.
