What did you think various acronyms meant before you were set straight?

For a while I thought "ftw" meant "fuck the what," as in a wtf reaction so powerful it knocked your words backwards.

before i knew DFW was for "Dallas Fort Worth" - or Davidfosterwallace - i imagined, eh, backwarD Falling World ..

When I had my first online chat experiences I learned, eventually, that lol didn't mean the listener was bored. I thought every one of my jokes had fallen flat until I was set straight.

Aw. So you thought it was just some in-group term of insult, not even an acronym? First time I heard "homeboy" in the late 80s I thought it meant couch potato or mama's boy.

I thought they were suggesting that they were lolling lazily about, yawning out of boredom or rolling eyes in disdain. Yep.

I say we revive "homeboy" the way you'd known it. Also, that reminds me that I used to think "busybody" meant someone was extremely productive. When I achieve that goal, I should proclaim myself a busy body and see if it catches on.
