Have you read Antoine Volodine? Minor Angels. His books are out in translation (he's French) from U of Nebraska press. I am just reading him now; I'm quite amazed.
Other living authors I like: Steve Weiner, in particular The Museum of Love. He lives in Vancouver but I don't think he's published in Canada.
