I don't like those much, either. (Double-blech on Amis; I had to read his backwards-narrated novel for a class. That Holocaust one. What a horrid little man.)

Have you read Antoine Volodine? Minor Angels. His books are out in translation (he's French) from U of Nebraska press. I am just reading him now; I'm quite amazed.

Other living authors I like:
Steve Weiner, in particular The Museum of Love. He lives in Vancouver but I don't think he's published in Canada.

Hmmm, who else.

Brian Evenson, especially Contagion & the re-issued Altmann's Tongue.
