I heard a podcast with Noah Hawley and he said The Man Who Wasn't There was a big influence on this season of Fargo. It has been so long since I watched it, I can't remember much about it.

I thought it was their best once, but it's been forever for me too. And they've made amazing things since.

I do remember that life's shrugging off of our attempts to find clear purpose inside it was big in that one, though. Sounds like Hawley's more committed to the "existentialist" stuff than I'd assumed. I suppose you can pit it against both kinds of evil in Fargo S2? Securing more than their fair share for your children and becoming the most powerful version of yourself are both equally ridiculous as aims, from the absurdist view.

But it seemed like doing your work and/or keeping your head down is being valorized, where it isn't in Man - his existence was just as unbearable before he tried stuff, which is why he tried stuff, I thought. And The Stranger seemed to be attacked in that one, in some oblique way.

I guess the typewriter stuff at the beginning does follow the drycleaning dream Thornton pursues. But electric typewriters kind of fell away, while we're all still dealing with (motherfucking) drycleaners. I imagine they must still exist? But I think the choice was supposed to underline the futility of the initial killings.
