The Night Of, episode 1 ...

Magnificent.

Best first episode of a series ever? I'm too hateblinded to trustworthily compare it to True Detective or Lost, but it sure feels better than those. Six Feet Under's was good but not this good, Mad Men and Mr. Robot likewise. Deadwood started bad, Hannibal middling, The Wire a bit tediously IIRC, much more of a setup than a suck-in. Breaking Bad's pilot improves when you've seen the whole series and can see everything that's already present, but that's not the same phenomenon as self-contained excellence.

Though if anything this show has an even worse title.

Seriously, applause-worthy. If the series ended with the episode it would count as one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years. How the hell they'd be able to keep this up I couldn't begin to imagine, and will just assume they won't.

Yeah I liked it a lot. It's great when realism works on TV. I like how they show people at work on this show. I like the detective. Watched four so far and think it holds up. It does not rush the proceedings though. Not sure how they get this done in 9 episodes.
