Trying to think how to spend this last week of non-teaching life. I seem to be too distracted to read.

Probably we should find a new television series, having just rewatched Lost Season 2. We can't get Itunes/Quicktime to play 3rd season episodes tolerably so we're waiting for December to review those. A third viewing of 1 is out of the question, since the second was excruciating: Lost isn't really a rewatchable show, it's pitched entirely, ingeniously on present-moment anxiety and inadequate understanding. You can get through an episode a second time to scour for missed clues, but give it at least a year or it's terribly tedious. 3 will therefore be terribly tedious but we have to do it.

I knew they'd pull something like the 3 finale at some point. The way they teased with that phone though, and Jack's father...this show expects your expectations so well at times. Its conclusion, once it starts concluding anything, is going to be heartbreakingly disappointing--there's just no way they can make it all fit as unstupidly as they've been revealing pieces. They're going to need to get increasingly supernatural, too. Poor, rich writers.

I'm looking at a "tv.com" list of "highest rated shows". The egregious Prison Break is apparently much preferred to Lost. Most popular here is Heroes which we've been carefully avoiding--looks like that addicting kind of awful, Alias minus the cheese value. The worst thing we could possibly watch is something mediocre but suspenseful, so maybe these cancelled shows are the answer, Firefly, Freaks and Geeks. West Wing and Sopranos are widely-recommended, but seem like too much of a time commitment. Arrested Development and Rome put us off, what we saw of them. House was fun but way too formulaic, Veronica Mars too something-or-other. Many on this list I haven't heard of. What's with all the science fiction shows these days?

We literally couldn't tolerate five minutes of the Anatomy and Housewife shoes. Is Entourage any good?

We're saving "unwatched" Seinfeld and Simpsons discs for deeper in the term, when we'll need some laughs. Extras and Weeds might be good for then too.

Wired Season 3? Deadwood 3? Sports Night?

I liked Trailer Park Boys for a while (seasons 4 & 5--and you don't have to start at the beginning). But I was often on Vicodin that week after my knee operation. I'm pretty sure you'd it's not the show you're looking for.

Never seen any Sports Night, but will look for it. Julie liked The Wire but found it too much for her, and as a Canadian finds Trailer Park Boys very embarrassing. Deadwood gets better as it goes?

If anything, maybe Deadwood declines. Season 3 is just the latest one on DVD. I figured you must've seen the earlier ones by now.

Whereas with Trailer Park Boys, I did mean to recommend seasons 4 & 5 as the best ones, from the little I've seen of earlier and later seasons.

Lost has some anime qualities. I reiterate that, if Lost were anime, it would be your worship object.
