Whenever my fellow townspeople make national news it's for something stupid, and usually deeply stupid. Ms. Teen SC, the Borat fratguys, the couple making love on the roof of a building downtown who rolled off and fell naked dead, the ones who died in that beach house fire (I'm just assuming something stupid was done), Men's Health identifying our drivers as the worst, the runway plane crash that Blink 182 guy was in, the attempt to put crosses on license plates, Sanford making no sense on CNN, Sanford thinking refusing the 700m for education and safety for the least educated and unsafest state would give him a shot at the presidency in 2012, Sanford thinking he could take off for days with no warning, Sanford's stupidest forced-affair-apology news conference ever. Outliers are fascinating things. Watching one up close like this must be a bit like seeing a meteor come down in the next field.

Americans are so uptight about monogamy this Sanford story is vibrating like crazy. The mistress lives in Palermo, I just read. I wonder how far from where Borges grew up.

Well, the desertion of duty and hypocrisy angles add some resonance. And if this were a Democrat, wouldn't the moon units be muttering something about gov't CEOs consorting with foreign nationals?

Was just reading that yesterday, Borges' description of Palermo in Evaristo Carriego. Puts love into his words in a way rare for him.
