Bizarrely, the masters I never thought I'd actually be able to finish is now in danger of overlength (80 pp double-spaced). Not that that means I'll actually be able to finish it. And man does it suck - I sure overestimated how much I cared about this topic.

Why the fuck did I ever leave Vancouver? "Most livable city on the planet"? Of course it is. Probably the most livable there will ever be. I think I saw it in its best years, before the park became endangered...heat and snow will make much of it a mud wallow shortly. And expansion, it's closed in in too many places. And frankly the traffic and food were both appalling. And we were smart to dodge the Olympics mess. And six months of rain took their toll every year. Etc.

The UK version of Difficult Loves has different contents than the American, including several stories never printed here, and that real estate short novel you can only get in Arrowsmith's old anthology. Adam One Afternoon has a few others that Harcourt never republished.

I read the T Zero stories out of order but now regret that. I think he was going after a progression, much more so than in Cosmicomics, even though from the table of contents you'd think it's all rag-a-tag. It's a somewhat less lovable book, but remarkably ambitious - it makes sense that this is what he was writing right before Invisible Cities, in fact. You feel the gear shift from Merely Great to The Thing Itself, like near the middle of Suttree. "Priscilla" = bravura.
