They did meet, after all. In 1984 Borges visited Rome, and Calvino gave a talk honoring him. When Calvino came up later to greet him, Borges said he recognized him by his silence.

Awesome picture. I've been thinking a lot lately about writers who try to carefully, effortfully work at building their own legacies/legends while alive (Nabokov, Joyce, Vollmann is a contemporary who does it) and those who just seem to stumble into these magnificent photo ops - Borges, maybe b/c he couldn't see shit and had to just accept it. I like to think of him that way anyhow.
