Julie's decided the incredible suckiness of 1Q84 has something to do with Murakami's not knowing how to handle 3rd person.

It's disturbingly worse than that. The lesbian experimenting scene early on reads like my nine year old wrote it.

I think when I finish what I'm reading now, I'll give it another try just to give him the benefit of the doubt. I really hope it's the translation. I haven't read any reviews in detail, and I know not three words of Japanese, but...

I think she meant his trouble handling it somehow led to all the other troubles, like everything he knew about novel-writing somehow got lost with the switch.

She says you're dead right about the lesbian scene.
