Sleeps this week went something like 2 hours, 11 hours, 10 hours, 4 hours, 10 hours.

This term I've confirmed 2-4 are infinitely better than 0 for most purposes. The trick is to caffeine bomb yourself for the first few hours after waking. You're fine for the latter two thirds of your day. Whereas with zero you start okay but get progressively worse. Makes sense, eh? The sheer nastiness of a short waking makes it hard to make the right choice, is the thing.

Nearly wept today at how happy I was able to feel. 10s are remarkable on the way up.

And after Thursday no more classes. The part of this I'm made for will begin.

Yes, zero hours is intolerable. I think the lower bound for useful sleep is about an hour and fifteen minutes. At the two-to-four range I can get through the day, but my concentration and short-term memory are pretty sorry.

1:15? That's morbidly fine tuned. Did you find it out while trying a 9 to 5?

Not exactly, but there is a lot of trial and error going into it. At what point does the risk of oversleeping outweigh the awfulness of not having slept at all? Part of the issue is that if you can't get one good REM cycle in, you won't be able to wake up AND it doesn't do you any good.

My current job has a 9am meeting every day. I've warned them that it will always be a weak point for me, but I've actually been moderately successful at being something like on time most of the time. It only works because a) I exercise all the time, b) I can wake up at 8:15 and still be at work on time, so that c) I can be up until 2, 3, even 4 am and still be ... well, if not functional, able to move, and d) everyone has after-hours work so that they understand "can't come in, have to sleep." I sleep a lot of four- or five-hour nights. It's a huge struggle, though, and I'm still waiting for it to spin out of control at a most inopportune time.

Yeah, I'm learning that a lengthy commute's not really viable.

Too bad there's no explaining this fucking thing to people. You'd probably be twice as productive if they moved the meeting to afternoons.
