The difficulty, in fiction, of having each moment feel like both a necessary link in a taut logical chain and just another blowing together of new life, a thing at once dissolved in further blowings. The trick is to bury the line such that you don't feel entirely sure where it's going, at times even whether it's there. And since the line is taut this means showing the little of it you do in highly misleading ways. A disturbance under carpet folds. A waving at the edge of an irregular reflection. Part of a maze of like lines.
The easy thing, in fiction, is misleading. Because such is the nature of reading you must be followed wherever you wish. Because anything you want overlooked you need only not mention. Because even when you can't quite make the right things happen you can insist that they already have, hold your index fingers high and parallel in the air, count to three, pull them down and apart and restart somewhere farther or later.
