We just watched the next to last. Our guesses remain plausible - the easiest one's dead solid. Of the other two major ones one's never been terribly important, just a rug-pull kind of thing, and the new info in this episode renders the other almost redundant. We found a trail, so to speak, but I'm now wondering if we wandered from one person's to another's, while assuming they were just one.
It's close to cheating but I'm trying to determine if that third guess was right based on just what they have time for.
Because they need to:
Reveal what's up with Audrey. Including showing us her art.
Give closure to Cohle's Christ impulse somehow.
Reveal the real nature of his eight year absence.
Reveal why Hart really left the force.
Show us the stones in the woods and explain various creepy words and images.
Resolve the Geracy thing.
Have the one detective find out about the other. And to some extent vice versa.
Have the other one detective find out about the other other.
Give payoff to that unimportant second guess, if it's right.
Challenge Cohle's nihilism, probably by setting it against another kind.
Articulate what the druggers see themselves as doing.
Have Marty realize the damage he's unwittingly done.
Explain the distinction between the beliefs of the druggers and the drugged.
Explain the distinction between the characteristic crimes of the ring and the murders.
Explain about the fly fishing moment.
Give us an explanation of - and non hazy look at - the 2012 murder.
Give us farewell scenes for several important characters, death scenes for others.
Start a fire.
A lot of these will be dovetailed. Others may be put down with strong hints, on the assumption that those who inferred enough to ask can infer the answers too. But guess 3 requires a few minutes. Probably a couple more than the alternative to guess 3 that's true if it is not. And which does most of the same work it does, really.
