Revisited that UK Amazon entry for the untitled McCarthy book. Turns out the isbn was already floating around in 2007 attached to an untitled book planned for 2010, so it's clearly the long novel he keeps kicking down the road. Which both strengthens and takes away the hope it'll appear soon.

Allegedly there's a short novel he's writing simultaneously that he envisions as part of the same project. He's 80, not a great age for composing, hence the obstinate retirements of Roth and Marquez, but has been working on some version of this project for decades - it's his second Suttree, in that sense.

I've been avoiding seeing his movie. I don't like when consistently impressive people suddenly fail me - which they can do even by being still impressive but somewhat less so, like Anne Carson's last book and Louis CK's recent efforts. It's unfair, and clearly nothing I've ever demanded of myself, but the notion of a person producing only great things enchants me. Presumably connects to the hope that one can discover a way to keep discovering, come to know how to keep knowing. Which, you know, is explicitly contrary to the message of thes or any other worthy artists. But somehow still a thing I love when they project.

I know what you mean.

The movie is pretty good. And doesn't much diminish your sense of him, since it's basically McCarthy being funny, as he often is in the novels, and not trying to be serious -- just having somewhat junky fun, with some great funny passages. The actors are clearly loving it, and he wrote something for actors to love.

Any idea what the book is about? Weren't there rumors of a book about axe murderers? Or a book about a sister?

Yeah, there were rumors about the New Orleans Axeman and a suicidal woman.gy
