First sustained meditation attempt. There's definitely something to it. I think of the mind as being a whole lot of things, most of which are unemptiable short of actual sleep, but a few processes did seem to fall away, others slow down. Kind of worked as a reset button. I'll try to remember to try again tomorrow.

Important to remember it's a skill like anything else. You suck at first, then you get better.

What's your sense of what exactly happens during meditation and what it does for someone?

Gosh. I've been thinking about this all day. I guess the goal is to observe a question without introducing any of your own biases.

I recommend speaking with Professor John Vervaeke at some point about this. He was the breakthrough I needed to see meditation as relevant/scientific instead of fluffy new-age garbage. I've definitely felt high after sessions with him, though it's been difficult to maintain on my own at home... Lemme know what you learn about it as you do it.
