"For oft we seemed
As on some starless sea--all dark above,
All dark below--yet, onward as we drove,
To plough up light that ever round us streamed."

Who is Sorge? What is The Forms of Death about? How did you come across it? Closest thing I could find via amazon.fr or google was Les Varietes de la Mort, apparently philosophical meditations by someone named Ferrari.

Ulp. There I had been imagining that those early entries were lost in the dark backward and abysm. Ah, well. "The Forms of Death" would be the fictional name of Maurice Blanchot's Death Sentence (L'arret de mort), Henri Sorge (Heidegger's "Care") being the strange hero of Blanchot's Le Tres-Haut. Sorge goes from a kind of rapturous Heideggerian praise of Being-as-totality to a sense of the irretrieveable otherness of others, especially of those who are unhappy. Great book.

Do you read Blanchot? Knowing your interest in gnosticism, it's not impossible that you would find him interesting. Bloom disapproves of my liking him, hates his criticism, but acknowledges something real in his fiction.

No, and I'm embarrassed to say I confuse him with Bataille. I bought the Station Hill Reader a few years ago for about a dollar but didn't read it; I'll fetch it from my parents' garage at Christmas.
