Ohhhh, okay. So the thingie on the island needs people for some reason but its aura prevents gestation so it has to call batches of people on through shipwrecks, planewrecks etc. and the newcomers get assimilated to the ancient brainwashy weirdo group or have to be killed off.

aha!

The wreck: classic literary trope for such a plot demand. Vitruvius called them learning experiences, but for a different reason. Wrecks are like weather for keeping people inside and out of other forms of trouble, or keeping them out and in trouble.

But you're also describing the Shakers, I think.

Hence Crowley's use of Gongora, I guess. On Lost the island seems to work on people's guilt, but when they step free of it the island loses its power over their minds and goes for murder.

The smart, old ones, like Catholicism and Judaism, know the surest bet is progeny--you're free to go, at age, but your memories are too full of echoes of those early pictures or voices by then for you to stray far. Ones that need some ideological core to stay intact, rather than just traditions and set phrases, had better manipulate the weather--e.g. Marxism, Scientology.
