School

I've been on a secret Shakespeare strike for these last five plays, coasting on prior knowledge for the little papers and in-class discussion. A recharge, but now I need to read those and two others in short space, and with papers resurrecting Titus and Julius Caesar from the first half of the term. H4-2 paper will probably require referencing H4-1 some, also, but I practically have that one by heart now.

Othello/Measure for Measure/Lear/Macbeth/Winter's Tale
Tempest/Henry 4, Part 2
Titus Andronicus/Julius Caesar

The Titus thing won't actually require rereading it, though I should note what Taymor cut. My fiancee refuses to watch the movie again because of the twig hands.

My grades don't matter except to keep on the good side of these professors. I may go Renaissance, after all.

awesome! that's my field too. it's a great base camp for other things if you decide to switch mid-stream. there aren't enough people in later periods who know anything pre-them.

it's a merciless crowd though. Thou will not only marvel where thou spendest thy time, but also how thou art accompanied!

In brief—I think we're harsher, in book reviews and at conferences, than our counterparts in other fields. Some people have really high expectations for the amount of languages and other cultures you need to be familiar with (high in terms of depth and breadth) and so you need to have a lot of confidence in, and clarity about, what you're doing. Also there's a lot of curmudgeonliness. People who hold themselves and others to scholarly standards that aren't the same as, or are disappointing to, those of us with more critical (in the sense of criticism) interests. That said I love it. It's hard but it's fun. You'll meet the smartest people. Spenserians are one brilliant band of wanderers.

Sounds awesome, actually. My heart is more toward Romantic literature, but maybe not as presently discussed. And Spenser, Shakespeare and Milton will definitely do.

Go Renaissance! Go Renaissance!

I don't know what the issues are. I just wanted to say that.
